First Day in the Classroom (Italian)

Communication Objective

Students will understand and respond to the informal greeting "Ciao!" (Hi!/ Bye!)

Students will understand the expressions "Come ti chiami?" (What’s your name?) and "Mi chiamo…" (My name is…), and will be able to respond accordingly when called upon.

Students will comprehend and use the expression "Piacere." (Pleased to meet you.)

Presentation

I will say "Hi!" to the students and encourage them to repeat the greeting.

I will then introduce myself and repeat this several times.

At this point I will greet a student, introduce myself, and ask the student "What is your name?"

After the student responds correctly I will say "Pleased to meet you." and will hold out my hand. When the student repeats the phrase I will shake his/her hand.

Then I will say "Bye!" to the student while waving my hand and pretending to walk

Practice: (2-minutes)

Here I will reinforce the basic phrases that have already been presented by calling upon other students at random and following through several times with the basic question/answer format.

I will encourage correct pronunciation by repetition and help those students still struggling by using hand gestures and facial expressions if necessary.

Application: (1-minute)

At this point I will have the students stand up and greet one another, introduce themselves, ask each other’s names and say "Pleased to meet you."

I will try to remain as the facilitator and coach them along- this allows them to interact freely.

Assessment: (1-minute)

I will ask students their name or greet them while mixing the order of the expressions. This will show whether or not the students have understood the various expressions by themselves instead of in the repeated order of presentation.
