Columbus --- Ohio Board of Regents Chancellor Eric D. Fingerhut today announced awards to eight Regents STEM and Foreign Language Academies for FY 2009. The academies recruit eleventh and twelfth grade students, particularly those who currently may not aspire to attend college or to study careers in the Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics and Medicine (STEM) fields, and place them into intensive college level classes at no cost to the student.
"Both students and the State of Ohio greatly benefit from students earning college credit in these targeted programs," said Chancellor Fingerhut. "Ohio needs college graduates with foreign language skills prepared for the demands and challenges of today’s globalized economy. Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics represent further critical areas of need for the economy. Increasing the production of these high demand degrees is also a top priority of the state’s business community."
Together, the first two years of the program made it possible for more than 800 students at public or chartered non-public schools to earn dual high school and college credit in the STEM fields. This year, the Academies are set to serve more than 300 additional students, as well as offer three new programs.
Winning projects are selected by a competitive, two-step review process that solicits proposals from partnerships of community colleges and universities – both public and private – and encourages collaboration and on-going interactions between K-12 and higher education. The proposals are expected to demonstrate excellence in engaging student learners through a strategic investment of funds.
