   Fellowship opportunities may exist that could potentially fund your US/China Links experience or defer some of the costs incurred in such a program. 

   Here are some additional suggestions for getting financial aid for US/China Links and other study abroad experiences.


A) The National Security Education Program (NSEP) has two programs for students who qualify forUS/China Links. Please be sure to clarify the national service provisions that Congress has attached to these programs. It is our judgement that these provisions will not be exercised, but you need to develop your own judgement in these matters.

B)
The Huntington National Bank pledged $250,000 to The Ohio State University Campaign in the form of an endowed fund to benefit humanities students interested in international business and foreign languages. Applications for the fellowship program are now available in the Foreign Language Center and the College of Humanities.  Information about this program can be obtained through the OSU Foreign Language Center

C) International Dissertation Field Research Fellowship Program awards. Information regarding this program can be obtained at http://www.ssrc.org/ or by emailing them at idrf@ssrc.org.

D) Foreign Language and Area Studies Graduate/Professional Fellowships. E) Phyllis Krumm Memorial International Scholarship. This is a scholarship for OSU graduate students who wish to study in Europe or China. Information again should be obtained through the Ohio State University International Studies Center and Douglas Southgate.

F) Fulbright Grants. Information can be obtained through Kevin Harty at 104 Oxley Hall at the Ohio State University.

G) Blakemore Freeman Fellowships for Advanced Asian Language Study.  The Blakemore Foundation of Seattle, Washington plans to make up to forty grants for the advanced study of modern Chinese, Japanese, Korean and Southeast Asian languages for the 2002/2003 academic year. Blakemore Freeman grants are intended for U.S. citizens and permanent residents who
have an undergraduate degree and are pursuing academic, professional or business careers that involve the regular use of an Asian language. The most important criteria for selection is a focused, well-defined career objective involving Asia in which the regular use of the language is an important aspect. The fellowships fund a year of advanced language study at an institution in Asia and cover tuition and a stipend for basic living costs, transportation and related educational expenses, but do not include dependent expenses. H) Louise Loh Memorial Scholarship. This scholarship is for fulltime OSU graduate or undergraduate students studying in the East Asian Studies field. There are two awards of $400.00 each per academic year. For information, contact the OSU East Asian Studies Center at (614)688-4253.

I) Robert Bartels Scholarship. This is a need-based scholarship for OSU undergraduate business majors whose major must benefit from the study abroad experience. Contact Rema King at the College of Business, (614)292-2811 or king.307@osu.edu.

J) Sonkin Family Scholarship. Designed for OSU graduate students who wish to conduct research or participate in a study program that promotes international understanding and peace, this award is an annual award of $500.00. Contact the OSU Office of International Studies.

K) Academic Challenge Intensive Chinese Language Scholarship. This scholarship is for undergraduate students with a 3.0 or higher GPA in a double major program that includes Chinese as one major. Contact the OSU East Asian Studies Center for information.

L) Freeman Awards for Study In Asia.  This fellowship program is for undergraduates only, and  grant awards ranging from $3,000 to $7,000 are given for summer study and/or academic year programs. http://www.iie.org/pgms/freeman-asia/

M) Thomas J. Watson Fellowship Program. Available to college graduates for research or study in an area of demonstrated concern and interest. Contact the Thomas Watson Foundation directly at (401)274-1952 for application information.

N) Rotary Foundation Ambassadorial Scholarship. A scholarship designed for both graduates and undergraduates, this program funds academic year programs supervised by an academic institute. O) The CIC Foreign Language Enhancement Program (FLEP) will award up to 24 scholarships to graduate students at CIC universities to pursue foreign language study this summer. Scholarships of $2,000 will be awarded to cover living expenses incurred while attending another CIC host institution.  This program is intended to help students take advantage of language offerings not available to them at their home university.  Applicants must be pursuing a graduate degree at one of the participating CIC institutions.  FLEP recipients may also apply to the CIC Traveling Scholar Program which enables graduate students to pay tuition and fees at their home institution while attending another CIC university.
